Hey, for those of you who don't get the Kalamazoo Gazette, there was a pretty cool edition of "Ticket - Your Entertainment Guide" this week that had a pretty extensive story about local summertime beers. It is great to see how many there are to choose from in our relatively small area of Michigan. There was also a picture of yours truly -- huge mop and all -- pouring a pint of our Olde Peninsula Tornado Ale brewed to commemorate the tornado of 1980 that actually took out part of the building we occupy.

Have a great Memorial Day and don't forget to pick up some local summertime beer and pass buy the boring mega-brews for flavor that can't be beat! Even if you aren't in Michigan!
Our next Bar Night will be Thursday, May 8th. This time around we will be meeting at Big T's in Lawton. We will again be meeting casually between 5:30 and 7:30. Check the following links for directions and details:
155 N Main Street Lawton, MI (Google Maps)

We have finalized our plans for Big Brew '08 which will be on May 3rd this year. We will be meeting at Scott Sebastian's home in Three Rivers, approximately 20 minutes south of downtown Kalamazoo. Many of you will remember this as the location for several past roast events.
See our discussion board or contact us for more details.
This is a friendly reminder that on Monday, April 21st we will be having our monthly club meeting. This month will be Gadget Night: a sort of "Show and Tell" of brewing tips, tricks and tools you have designed or stumbled upon. If the item is large, feel free to bring pictures or plans you used.
Looking forward to seeing all of you on the 21st.
From a representative of the Ann Arbor Brewers Guild:
We're doing a workshop on ancient brewing practices here at Circle Pines Center in Barry Co. Michigan (close to Hastings). Attached is the flier. We have miles of hiking trails, 300 acres of forest and prairie and a lake, so the whole family could come, have fun and keep busy! Hope any of you at KLOB can make it out.
Thanks!
For more information, see the post on our discussion board.
This is a friendly reminder that this Wednesday, April 9th, we will be having our monthly bar night. We will be meeting at Zeb's Trading Company in Texas Township. Again, this is an informal gathering and an opportunity for members to interact outside of our normal meeting environment. Stop by any time between 5:30pm and 7:30pm.

This is a friendly reminder that on Monday, March 24th we will be having our monthly club meeting. This month will be a presentation on

Hope to see you all there!
In perhaps an ultimate irony, beer gets in the way of beer. The 3rd Monday of March will fall on, of all days, St. Patrick's Day. As we don't want to have our members "play favorites", we are going to move our monthly meeting so everyone can fully celebrate the holiday without missing out on our presentations on Schwartzbier. We will be pushing back March's meeting to the 24th and hope that helps everyone make it out.
We're happy to announce that we will be having a special event for this month's meeting: a tour of the newly renonvated Bell's Comstock location by the man himself, Larry Bell. Obviously, this means we will not be meeting at our normal location. Instead, we request everyone meet at the brewery at the normal meeting time of 7pm. Here's the info:
8938 Krum Ave.

If you have any questions, contact Chris E or Dan K. Hope to see you all on the 18th.
It's been brought to my attention that O'Duffy's isn't open on Mondays. If anyone is still interested, we'll be meeting at Bell's. Sorry for the last minute change.

If you will be brewing at either or our Big Brews, you should plan on bringing a "Y" connector for water, a length of hose for your chiller, an extension cord if you need AC power, and a power strip to plug into. If you are coming to watch you may want to bring paper and a pen to jot down notes. A camera might not be a bad thing to bring also -- take pictures of the different parts of the process to refer to at a later date.

Everything should be working just fine so if you see something that doesn't seem to work, please email the administrator at discus@klob.org.

GOOD NEWS! We have our new server set up and ready to go. I am giving our website a facelift as we wait for our DNS numbers to be transferred by Internic. This may take some time because they were registered by Kris Jacobs via a company email address where he no longer works. Now we have to do things the old fasioned way with snail mail and faxes. Hopefully we will have www.klob.org and a new KLOB Discussion Board up and running in the next few weeks. Have a fun and festive 4th of July!
Don't forget National Homebrew Day on May 5th! The club will be showcasing some of our member's brew-setups in action on the loading dock behind Bell's Brewery between 9:00am and 7:00pm. Please make plans to attend if you are brewing or not. This is a great opportunity to learn how other people brew and is a great chance for exposure for the club. I will look far more impressive and help KLOB's image if there is a big turnout. Thanks for your support of KLOB.
There will be a showing of the "KLOB's Big Brew 2001" Video at tonight's meeting for anyone who is interested. If you weren't able to make the Big Brew, this is the next best thing.
Mark O has gathered this information for us. Take a look and please respond if you think that it is up your alley:
To: Arbor Brewers Guild <aabg@hbd.org>
Subject: AABG: MI State Fair Judging
Earl has offered the use of Dragonmead (in Warren on I-696) for the MI State Fair Homebrew Competition judging. I have checked the legalities of this with Rex and was informed that this is marginally acceptable when you examine the Liquor Control Commission rules.
SO.....I have a place that would fit the bill as far as environment. Now what I need is feedback on the geographical location. Jeff, this place is WAY east of US-23! For all that have judged in the past, would this location cause you to back out of the event? I would like a judge turnout like last year, so I really value your input.
For all those on the other HB club lists (Mark, Crispy, Phil, Aaron, etc.) please distribute this to your club members.
Cheers!

We are already getting requests for KLOB Roast 2001 tickets. We haven't begun selling tickets this year but if you want to be notified as soon as we do and have first crack at them, send a message to klob@mail.com Make sure to include your email address in the body of the message.
Hello Boys and Girls - The 2001 MI State Fair Homebrew Competition is now in the planning stage. I am looking for a few things right now to get the ball rolling.
1) Most importantly, we need a venue for the judging. If you, or someone you know has a location that we can use for the judging, let me know. Ideal locations would include community rec centers, apartment clubhouses, etc. The building should have suitable lighting, climate control, dishwashing facilities, etc. We are looking for a donation here, but if that cannot be found, we may look for donors to cover the cost. In/around the Ann Arbor area will be preferred.
2) Suggestions for bettering the competition are needed. If there is something about the past competitions that you thought could improve, let me know.
3) volunteers for various roles. Let me know what you want to do, and I will duly appoint you!
For all you cross-listed clubbers that are members of the FORD, CRAFT, Prison City, KLOB, etc. ..... Please forward this request to your other clubs.
Cheers!

At today's meeting we will be beginning a three part series on "Twenty things that you can do to improve your beer". Be sure to attend today's meeting as it promises to be very informative.
For those of you who didn't notice the KLOB tasting sheet that is available online, the link for it is located on the main page next to the "Next Meeting" link. Please fill out a sheet for each beer you bring to the meeting so people can get a general idea about each brew (or at least what style it is!)

Hey KLOB Members! Make sure to check out Randy H's post about White Labs yeast on the Discussion Board. He has worked a deal with Jason @ Bell's General Store to carry their yeast and Jason is taking requests!
I just talked to one of the guys who does the Beer Advocate and they have agreed to put a link to our site on their page. It is one of only THREE links to homebrewing clubs and organizations! Their site is a must see if you like good beer (and I know you do).
Bull Falls Home Brewers of Central Wisconsin is sponsoring their third annual Minocqua-ice-cold-fest homebrew contest. Entries must be received by January 5th, 2001.
At the December 4th meeting, the club voted in favor of establishing KLOB Bylaws and the following officers were nominated and elected on 12-04-00 for the year 2001:
- President - Dan Kiplinger
- Vice President - Jim Hagey
- Secretary - Steve Higdon
- Treasurer - Hilary Sterns
- Past President - NA
Congratulations to the new board of officers!
Since we don't yet have officers (and consequently no Secretary) we are going to try to give a rough sketch of the Agenda for December's meeting:
-Dan J. is going to bring a set of proposed by-laws for us to ratify or deny
-Depending on the outcome of the by-law debate, we may be taking nominations for next year's officers
-The Brewstand Committee that volunteered at October's meeting will be presenting their findings on the money needed to finish rebuilding the KLOB Brewstand
-Determining the fate of the KLOB Website (this one) as far as where it will be served and how we can use klob.org and make our member's only password protected pages work more efficient
-We also will be filling out much of the calendar for next year's events. If you want to give a short talk on something, please come and let us know.
KLOB Roast 2000 is in two weeks! Every member should have their tickets by now. Please update your progress on the Discussion Board on Monday September 4th and 11th. This is very important. Many beers have been confirmed and the schedule of events has just been posted (Check out the KLOB Roast 2000 link on the main page). The ticket price for this year's Roast is so ridiculously low because we only desire to break even on the event itself. KLOB encourages you to try to get raffle prizes donated from area restaurants, shops, and breweries because this is how we raise funds for the year.
I have put up a temporary page containing member information. You can link to it from the "Member's Site" link choosing "Member Information" after that. This will stay up until Kris adds the permanent Member Information page. If any information is not there or inaccurate, let us know. This list is the most accurate list that I could gather. I am sure that there are members that are not listed. This is one reason we wanted this list online -- so we could get it straightened out.
I just did a minimal reorganization and cleaning job on the Discussion Board. It has grown to be fairly large and is full of information and links. If you haven't been there before, whao! You are in for a surprise. I have some advice towards navigating the Discussion Board. Make use of the features that are built in to the Board. Under "Utilities" try the "New Messages" feature if you haven't been to the page in more than one week. Otherwise, make use of the "Last Day" and "Last Week" options under the "Discussion" folder on the left frame. If you are looking for a specific person's post or a particular subject, make use of the "Keyword Search" feature under "Utilities".
The KLOB Roast 2000 Discussion is in full swing on the Discussion Board. If you are a new member and you haven't yet registered on the Member's page, do so immediately. The KLOB Discussion Board will be our main means of communication throughout the preparation for the Roast.
For those of you who have officially joined KLOB in 2000 and still need a member/discount card, Dan J is your man. He has graciously taken over what Joe M left behind in his move to northern Michigan. I would like to personally thank Joe for all the help he gave the club by designing the member cards. Thanks Joe. Keep in touch. If you are in need of a member card, please go to the Discussion Board and make a post under the first sub-topic under "General Discussion".
Just finished working on a new smaller logo which you can see above. I am in the process of adding it to the nearly 60 pages on this website. The new logo is keeping with our original logo's scheme and will be useful to add to things that the larger logo would not be suitable for. I hope everyone likes it.
From now until the day of the event, the details pertaining to KLOB Roast 2000 will be available for viewing to all members on the Discussion Board under the main topic "KLOB Roast 2000". Please participate in the discussion. Any input is good input!
A brief synopsis of July's meeting pertaining to the upcoming KLOB Roast is available on the Discussion Board under the "General Discussion" topic and "Is Anybody Out There" sub-topic. Look for a main topic "KLOB Roast 2000" coming soon. That is where we will have the main conversation pertaining to the details of KLOB Roast 2000. Note: Take advantage of the features on the Discussion Board. New Messages and Keyword Search have made it a breeze to easily locate posts without having to wade through the ever growing mountain of individual posts.
In order for the KLOB Newsletter to not be one man's banter, other members of the club must contribute articles, suggestions, and/or other tidbits. (Thanks to those who have and still contribute)
