October Meeting

This is a friendly reminder that we will be holding our normal monthly meeting this Monday, October 20th at 7pm at Boatyard Brewing Company.  Member and Bell's General Store manager David Curtis will discuss how he uses a cask to age and serve his beer from the same vessel, also known ask "real ale".

Kalamazoo Kup 2014

In an effort to help those brewers who are new to competitions and improve the quality and diversity beer brewed by the club, we are pleased to announce the second annual THE KALAMAZOO KUP.  To keep this small and manageable, this competition will be exclusively for KLOB members.  You can submit 1 entry to any of the 23 major BJCP beer categories with a maximum to 3 total entries.  There will be a cap of 80 entries for the entire competition so you'll want to submit yours as soon as possible.  We will be accepting entries starting at the November 17th meeting. After that, you can drop off your entries to Tempo Vino until December 3rd.  The 10 highest scored beers will go on to a Best in Show.

This will be a sanctioned BJCP competition.  If you or someone you know are a BJCP judge interesting in earning credit, please contact us.

Please check out all the details on our website, including some rules and tips to keep in mind as your preparing your entry.  Good luck!

Learn to Homebrew Day

Every year the American Homebrewers Association encourages clubs and other organizations to host events in their communities that showcase the process and result of homebrewing.  This effort has grown into the annual Learn to Homebrew Day. We are happy to announce that we will be partnering with our friends at Boatyard Brewing Company to hold our own LTHD event on Saturday, November 1st starting at noon.  If you are interested in helping out by brewing or organizing, please contact us.  This is a great opportunity to introduce your friends, family and co-workers to the world of homebrewing!

Oktoberfest Follow-Up

A huge thanks to all of our volunteers who helped make our appearance at the Vine Neighborhood Association's Oktoberfest event a huge success.  We had 11 fantastic beers on tap as well as 5 different homebrewing demos showing the public not just how great homebrew can be but also the process behind it.  We were one of the most popular spots at the festival and I had numerous people tell me how great our beers were.

Part of the rules that allowed to share our beer with all the people attending the event was that it was held as a "judging".  We collected votes from all the patrons who sampled our beers and the results were very close!  Here are the top 3:

  1. Perfect Peach (peach wheat, Brad Wyant, 63 votes)
  2. Pumpkin Tide (pumpkin amber, Jason Kniss, 62 votes)
  3. Devil's Tears (pumpkin stout, Jay VanBuskirk, 43 votes)

Bell's Homebrew Competition

It was fun to see all the vendors and homebrewers from the region at the Bell's Homebrew Expo, especially all of our fellow KLOB members.  Just a reminder, entries for the competition are due Saturday, October 25th.  You need to drop off four 12 oz. bottles at Bell's General Store.  Winners will be announced at All Stouts Day at the Eccentric Cafe on November 2nd.

November Art Hop

Member David Jones is working with the owners at Bark's Fifth Avenue in the Oakwood Plaza to have KLOB and our homebrew showcased at their November 7th Art Hop location.  If you interested in helping serve beer or donate several bottles to the cause, please get in touch with us.
