July Meeting at Bell's, Roast 2012 Tickets, Porter Competition, Great Taste Tickets and Bit O' Heat Release

We have several big announcements going into this month's meeting:

July Meeting at Bell's Brewery in Comstock

If you're not already aware, we will be having a special event for this month's meeting. Instead of meeting at Old Dog Tavern in downtown Kalamazoo, we will be getting a private tour of the Bell's Brewery. This is NOT the downtown facility next to the Eccentric Cafe but the large and newly remodeled and expanded production facility in Comstock/Galesberg.

8938 Krum Avenue
Galesburg, MI 49053

There are few additional details:

  1. This event is for MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING ONLY. If you have yet to renew for 2012 or have a friend, family member or co-worker who wants to attend, you will need to settle up on dues prior to the tour. Please come early if that is the case.
  2. Given the extra distance from downtown Kalamazoo and the fact that there is limited parking at the brewery, we STRONGLY RECOMMEND CARPOOLING.
  3. The tour will START PROMPTLY AT 7:00PM. If you have any club business prior to the tour, please come early. If you're worried you may get lost on the way, leave early.

Roast 2012 Tickets on Sale!

Our annual Roast event is scheduled for this September 15th. For those who have never attended, the Roast is an opportunity for all of our members and their friends and family to come together to share homebrew and enjoy high quality BBQ. We'll get things underway at noon and go until 8pm. This year's location will be the Woods Shelter at Coldbrook County Park in Climax, just 20 minutes from downtown Kalamazoo.

There are many great activities to do at Coldbrook including disc golf, fishing, volleyball and softball. For those of you who want to camp-out that evening, you need to make reservations with county parks department in advance. RV sites, which are also ideal for rustic camping, are $20 and you may be required to reserve for two nights.

Tickets will go on sale at this month's meeting. The officers and Roast planning committee has done everything possible to keep the ticket price as low as possible. The cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Members must have their 2012 dues paid in full to receive their discount so if you have yet to renew, now is a great time to do so. The ticket covers the cost of your entrance into the park, dinner and a collectible pint glass.

Speaking of food, dinner will be served by Sean Anderson Catering. Sean will be preparing a WHOLE HOG for our event which should mean there will be plenty of tasty barbecue for everyone. He'll also be providing several side dishes and pre-dinner munchies. If you have any special dietary requirements, let us know and we'll attempt to accommodate.

As for beer, that's where you come in! This is a BYOB event but, more importantly, this is a chance for you to bring you biggest and brew homebrews to share with your fellow members. So start brewing today or set aside your favorite libations to bring to the Roast!

Again, tickets will be available at this month's meeting. After that date, they will be available at Tempo Vino winery in downtown Kalamazoo. We are limiting the total number so make sure to get yours as soon as possible. T-shirt pre-orders will also be available with the shirts at a price of $13. AHA Club-Only Porter Competition

We had announced at our previous meetings, we are holding an intra-club competition to select a representative beer for the national AHA club-only porter competition. Due to the change in venue for the July meeting, we'll be holding this competition on Tuesday, July 17th at 7pm. We'll be meeting at Old Dog Tavern in downtown Kalamazoo and likely organize in their front room for some added privacy. All members are welcome even if you didn't brew an entry yourself. We want as many votes as possible so we can choose the best beer to send to the national competition.

GTMW Tickets

The 25 Great Taste of the Midwest tickets have arrived and will be available for pick up at the July meeting at Bell's. If you purchased a ticket, please come a little early so we can square up quickly and not hold up the tour. If you cannot attend the July meeting, the tickets will be available for pick up at Tempo Vino in downtown Kalamazoo.

IF YOU PURCHASED A TICKET AND CANNOT ATTEND THE EVENT, please let one of the officers know and we will attempt to get your ticket to another member. Please DO NOT SELL YOUR TICKET ON EBAY, CRAIGSLIST, ETC.. We will try to get your money back and assure that more KLOB members can attend the event.

Bit O' Heat Release

As many of you may not, KLOB member Geoff Groff won this past year's Bell's Homebrew Contest. The beer he submitted was a habanero IPA and, as a prize, he worked with the brewers at the downtown Bell's brewery to recreate it on their full-scale, 10 bbl. system. The wait is finally over and the resulting beer will go on tap on Saturday, July 21 at 3:00pm. Come join us at the Eccentric Cafe to celebrate unique and awarding beer!
