November Meeting

This is a friendly reminder that we will be meeting this Monday, November 21st at 7pm. The meeting will be held at Old Dog's Pub so, please, no outside beverages.

Learn to Homebrew Day 2011: Follow-Up

A big "thank you" to everyone who attended this past weekend's brewing demos at Bell's Eccentric Cafe. And even bigger thanks to Geoff Groff, Mark Pangle and Dan Jeska who brought their gear and showed everyone the in's and out's. Last but not least, thanks to David Curtis and the crew at Bell's for hosting the event.

Check out some pictures from the event on Bell's Flickr gallery:

Geoff Groff Wins the 2nd Annual Bell's Homebrew Competition

A hearty congratulations goes out to member Geoff Groff on his recent win at the 2011 Bell's Homebrew Competition. He won with an IPA that included smoked malts, paradise seeds, rose hips and Habanero peppers. Besides receiving the honor of having the best judged beer from 129 entries, Geoff will also get the opportunity to re-brew his beer at the Bell's downtown brewery and have it served at the Eccentric Cafe.

Also included in the honorable mentions was member Nelson Tansey and the team of Adam Majka and Chris Elston. Nelson submitted a beer that was dry hopped and contained brown sugar. Adam and Chris brewed a "harvest ale" using homegrown hops and Michigan honey.

Holiday Meeting 2011: Barley Wine

It's that time of year again and we're planning another very special holiday meeting. The theme this year is barley wines and we hope to provide a wide variety of samples for this very intriguing style. The club will provide a few snacks including bread, cheese and sausage. If you would like to bring in your own dishes to share, please don't hesitate.

We are pleased to announce that we will be meeting at special location for this event: the Saniwax Gallery at Park Trades Center. Those unfamiliar the location, the building is downtown on Kalamazoo Ave. between Church and Park Streets, soon after passing the Amtrak train station. The gallery is located on the second floor and the entrance is at the front of the building under an awning marked Saniwax Gallery. Parking will be available on the street and behind the building in a private lot. See more details about the gallery here:

The meeting will be held at our normal time of 7pm. Please make arrangements for transportation or a designated driver. Like every other club event, non-members are welcome including family, friends and co-workers.

Intra-Club Competition: Dunkelweizen

At the October meeting we discussed a competition called the Quest for the Golden Growler Homebrew Club Challenge sponsored by the Bull Falls Homebrew Club in Wausau, WI. Read more about it here:

http://klob.org/node/138

The basic idea is that each club submits a representative beer to the competition and the best club is chosen. A number of members expressed interest in participating in the event so KLOB will be submitting an entry in February. One of the best ways to chose which beer we will send, and the one we will employ, will be to have an intra-club competition. The style is dunkelweizen or a dark wheat beer. You can read the BJCP description here:

We will conduct our competition at the January meeting which will be held on the 16th. Bring enough samples so each of the participants can have a 1 to 2 oz. sample. Also leave enough in case we choose your beer as the one we will send.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 21st! Keep checking the club website to see the latest information and to share information will your fellow brewers.
